electrolyte replenishment using salt substitute – can I use this?
I have been adding common table salt to water to replenish electrolytes lost in sweat. However, understanding that table salt only contains sodium, I have been looking for alternatives that also contain potassium and magnesium (I believe these are the three main electrolytes to be replenished)
I found this “salt substitute” at the local Carrefour, which contains the following:
sodium chloride 68% +/- 10%
potassium chloride 27% +/- 5%
tricalcium phosphate (used mainly as anti-caking agent per wikipedia)
magnesium sulfate (also known as epsom salt)
magnesium carbonate (per wiki, in high concentration used as laxative, is not toxic. It is slightly hazardous in case of skin and eye contact and may cause respiratory and digestive tract irritation in case of ingestion or inhalation)
calcium lactate (can be used as calcium supplement)
the last four chemicals together constitute about 5%. I looked up wiki on these four and they seem to be safe. So I start using about a quarter tablespoon for every 750ml water bottle. Don’t mind the taste.
Just to be safe, I want to check with this forum to see if anyone is using the same thing or see any red flag in long term use.
